They always ask, they always do
What's so bad about being you?
How can someone so lovely be down?
Someone with so many loving people around
But they don't see and they don't know
What's really going on below
They always say the same old phrases
But they only know the cover, let's get to the pages
"You're too pretty to be sad" they say like beauty saves all
But what's under my skin and my legs so tall?
You don't know what I look like with no makeup on
You've never seen me crazy with all caution gone
"Such a smart girl can't be into anything bad"
Tell that to the last drunk night that I had
Or the drugs in my backpack or on my dresser or floor
And the last time I couldn't even walk out the door
"Your parents are together, all you know is their love"
And plenty of times I've heard they've had enough
And I watch them drink bottles and bottles each night
And I sit there being told I'm the cause for their fight
"People like you a lot, you don't have any enemies"
My used to be best friend won't even look at me
And everyone leaves or stabs you in the back
So many friendships have ended I've long since lost track
"You seem so happy, someone who smiles so often mustn't be sad"
Or maybe I just never want anyone else to feel this bad
Outward appearance doesn't show what's in your mind
The smiles contain all the darkness you'd find
But thank you sincerely for your dumb observations
For that you receive a standing ovation
For so rudely judging a life you don't even understand
Maybe look at those pages of the book in your hand.
