Thanksgiving. Say the word and thoughts fly to turkey, Pilgrims, Native Americans.
When I think of Thanksgiving, I envision lists, carloads of groceries, days of cooking. The thought alone makes me deliriously happy!
My holiday goes like this:
“Hey, Keri. It's Momma. Have you decided what you want for Thanksgiving"
"Ben, name your dish."
Herb, are you sticking to speckled butter beans?"
After the initial polling come recipe gathering and grocery buying. It's then that I settle in for my weeklong cooking marathon. With one oven, the planning is complicated, but I glory in the challenge. And when F-Day rolls around, I am ready. The spread is profuse, the leftovers last through the entire weekend and, yes, the work is overwhelming.
So, you ask, why?
My answer is simple: I'm giving thanks! When we gather around the long makeshift table, fancy with fall leaves
Abby has gathered to nest Harrison's pinecone turkeys, I look around and see the faces of those I love most. Beyond the biggest turkey I can buy is Bebe's cornbread dressing with giblet gravy, Brock's mashed potatoes with skins, David's candied sweet potatoes and my sweet potato casserole. Keri gets both macaroni and cheese and fresh turnip greens.
Every dish, you see, is my personal gift, my prayer of thanks, my gesture of caring. After all, what better way to say "I love you" than "Here, Ben, are rutabagas made just for you."
Come sit with us, Father, and know our thanksgiving. –PAM KIDD
